Catnip, a member of the mint family, is a harmless "high" for felines. Although many cats will eat it, scientists say they're reacting to the smell rather than the taste. Felines bite, chew, rub against, and roll in catnip to release the volatile oil trapped in the leaves. Mountain Lion is harvested when this essential oil production reaches its peak, and leaves and fragrant flowers are carefully air-dried to preserve essential oils at their best.
You can put a teaspoon or so of the catnip on the floor or rug, tie it up in a bit of cloth for a temporary toy, or rub it into the cat's fur. Mountain Lion's slogan is "Just a pinch will make 'em pouncy." At that rate, the half-ounce bag will last a good long while.
About 80% of adult cats -- including lions, pumas, and leopards! -- react to this irresistible, intoxicating, analgesic soporific. The tendency to like or ignore catnip is inherited, and it is true that some cats are immune to its influence. But the Baslers think cat lovers should try Mountain Lion before they give up on catnip as a treat for their furry friends. Cats may pounce, roll, chase imaginary mice, stare, cry blissfully, and eventually fall asleep after enjoying a catnip fling. It's very amusing to watch. Kittens, however, don't care for catnip until they are about 6 months old.
We at Mountain Lion feel sorry for cats who have never experienced the real thing. Often when cats don't seem to like catnip it's because their people have unknowingly bought poor quality products. Some toy manufacturers even use an artificial catnip spray!
Cat lovers who've never heard of catnip or have bought stale, weak herb for their pets are missing out on a lot of fun. Cats in the throes of catnip ecstasy pounce, roll, jump, drool, or play frantically. One of our customers put it perfectly. She wrote "I laughed 'til I cried at his antics." Mountain Lion can really make a cat -- even a portly old cat -- act like a kitten again.
